Principals Of Game Based Learning

Game based learning has attained huge fame and success in the recent years, with games becoming the medium for formal and informal learning. Under this theory, the games are used to train the employees of companies. The proposal for gamified content is increasing and becoming varied with video games designed for nearly all the target audiences and sectors. Due to further development in video game technology, experts are forced to conduct an in-depth research on the design and effectiveness of game based learning. They look for the instructional designing approaches for designing advanced game based learning to make them prevalent and effective in the training industry.

Game Based Learning methodology is based on certain principals:

Motivating Approach: One of the fortes of game-based learning is its predictable capacity to capture the attention of the learners and ensure their full engagement. The motivating approach of learning games turns the learning process into something energetic and fascinating, whose appeal is retained as the learner’s headway to achieve objectives.

Constructivist Learning:
Game based learning involve learners to build their own procedures to solve a problem. This makes them participative and interact with the environment to solve the given situations.

Intellectual Learning:
Games enhance active learning by allowing the learners to think critically while experiencing the pleasure that makes them want to learn more.

Competition:
Competition is a key factor in games, therefore, it is an encouragement for many students to learn. Competition is perceived to make students have more engagement and learn from their defeat or success through reflection and critical thinking.

Interaction and Experience:
The pillars of Game Based learning are practice, experiential learning, and interaction. Learning through games permits students toexperiment in non-threatening scenarios and acquire knowledge through practice and social interaction both with the environment and their peers.

Personalized Learning:
Under this theory of game based learning, the students can control their learning. They easily assess their learning and find the areas for improvement. Serious games allow instant personalized feedback.

Creativity:
Game based learning provides platform for innovation, adaptation, and creativity. The learner is a producer and not a mere consumer. They have to solve their problems using their imagination, which enhances encouragement and motivation. There is more interactivity as there is an action to everything they do and again they act on what game has done.

A Game based learning platform implemented for corporate training is more likely to succeed than a typical e-learning program, be it the traditional or virtual learning. Knowledge retention is much higher through games, which warranties a real and energetic learning. Cost savings is another huge advantage due to its flexibility in time and space.
